Mom mulls Supreme Court Bible appeal

NEWTON SQUARE, Pa., June 29 (UPI)

A Pennsylvania woman

says if she pursues her dispute in court over Bible-reading in her son’s kindergarten, it will be to stand up for free speech.

“Freedom of speech is being able to be who you are no matter where you are, and that was taken away,” Donna Kay Busch told the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Busch and her lawyers have until the end of August to decide if they will take their case to the U.S. Supreme Court and seek the overturn of a lower court ruling that said the Marple Newton School District acted properly when it banned her from reading Bible verses at a class presentation.

The newspaper said Monday that the presentation involved “All About Me Week” at her son, Wesley’s school. Reading from the Bible reflected the Busch family’s religious convictions.

An appeals court said restrictions on free speech were sometimes necessary to “create the structured environment in which the school imparts basic social, behavioral, and academic lessons.”
