CANTON, N.C. (October 13, 2009)—The Amazing Grace Baptist Church in Canton, N.C. will celebrate Halloween by burning Bibles that aren’t the King James Version, as well as music and books and anything else Pastor Marc Grizzard says is a satanic influence.

Among the authors whose books Grizzard plans to burn are well known ministers Rick Warren and Billy Graham because he says they have occasionally used Bibles other than the King James Version, which is the sole biblical source he considers infallible.

According to the church’s Web site, members will also burn “Satan’s music such as country, rap, rock, pop, heavy metal, western, soft and easy, southern gospel, contemporary Christian, jazz, soul (and) oldies.

“We will also be burning Satan’s popular books written by heretics like Billy Graham, Rick Warren, Bill Hybels, John McArthur, James Dobson, Charles Swindoll, John Piper, Chuck Colson, Tony Evans, Oral Roberts, Jimmy Swagart, Mark Driskol, Franklin Graham, Bill Bright, Tim Lahaye, Paula White, T.D. Jakes, Benny Hinn, Joyce Myers, Brian McLaren, Robert Schuller, Mother Teresa, The Pope, Rob Bell, Erwin McManus, Donald Miller, Shane Claiborne, Brennan Manning (and) William Young.

During the book burning, according to the Web site, barbecued chicken fried chicken and “all the sides” will be served.

  2. Different translations of the Bible are wonderful tools for searching the Scriptures. There are very few of the translations to which I would object. Evidently Mr. Grizzard is not aware of the multitude of spurious passages in the KJV. Now most of the rest of that stuff I wouldn’t miss–though I agree with CJ that it does seem like shades of the Dark Ages!

  4. Alas!
So sorry and deeply grieved by having such an extra ordinary news. It seems that only ‘the pastor Marc Cz ‘is inspired man of GOD and those who read and beilieve GOD through other translations are satanic and will never inherit the kingdom of God. I Being from baptist denomination, strongly oppose such foolish, shameful and unusual actvity by this perticular pastor and church. May the Lord open eyes of pastor and his followers. No such cheap fame will save him from the wrath of the Almighty.

  5. Tonight the heavens opened and rain fell. Book burning didn’t take place. There were several news crews, reporters, Sheriff and protesters. If I had been the pastor I would have been embarrassed that more protesters came out than members. There may have been books destroyed but when the flock left the building it was the woman and children first, only five of them and then the pastor himself. As the woman and children left he turned out the porch light, as if trying to hide their identities and turned it on and then back off when he left.

During the service it was said the news crew and others were listening through the floor upstairs and could here yelling from the service. The only disappointing thing was that more locals didn’t attend the event. One came as far as Chattanooga, Tn and others an hour or so away. Was a peaceful event and most that were there didn’t agree with this radical man!

There were signs that read things like: What would Jesus do, Who are we to judge and several others. A gentleman that was dressed in an outfit of a Nazi soldier came out, gave an interview saying this promotes hate. He wouldn’t give his name and held two books, one was the Mormon bible and the other was not able to be seen. He did say that he was only wearing a costume and that is all it was. Protesters were unsure if he was there in support of the event or against it. Left most of us puzzled.

We are unsure if chicken and all the sides were served!

  6. Thanks Ginger for the update.

It is one thing to disagree with error and voice that disagreement and even warn others about it. I am all for that, but, burning books, and various translations of the Bible just smells of the days of the inquisition and I would think any protestant would stay as far away from that as possible. I do hope that they were ashamed of that and will think a little clearer the next time someone suggests such things.

  7. I feel sorry for the young people there when they find out God didn’t speak English at all. Nor did he use any people speaking english. Its hard for them to honor thier parent
when that un-learned. Just another separatist group. God delivers many from ignorance.
