Are the “two witnesses” two literal individuals, and if so why? Or do the “two witnesses” represent something else? If so what, and why?

Are the “two witnesses” two literal individuals, and if so why? Or do the “two witnesses” represent something else? If so what, and why?

Rev 11:2 But the court which is without the temple leave out, and measure it not; for it is given unto the Gentiles: and the holy city shall they tread under foot forty and two months.

Rev 11:3 And I will give power unto my two witnesses, and they shall prophesy a thousand two hundred and threescore days, clothed in sackcloth.

Rev 11:4 These are the two olive trees, and the two candlesticks standing before the God of the earth.

The “two witnesses” are symbolic of the Old and New Testaments, the Word of God. The Word of God was chained up, or kept in the dead languages so that the public could not have access or read the Truth.

The next verse says that the “two witnesses” are the “two olive trees” and the “two candlesticks.” The Lord has given us an equation: A=B=C.  So if we can determine what one of them is, then we can determine the others and then the job is to see that we can have proof of the three equaling each other once we have come up with a definition.

The Bible as a witness

2 Corinthians 13:1 This is the third time I am coming to you. In the mouth of two or three witnesses shall every word be established.

John 5:39 Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify [witness] of me.

John 5:45-47 Do not think that I will accuse you to the Father: there is one that accuseth you, even Moses, in whom ye trust.  46  For had ye believed Moses, ye would have believed me: for he wrote of me.  47  But if ye believe not his writings, how shall ye believe my words?

Acts 3:21 Whom the heaven must receive until the times of restitution of all things, which God hath spoken by the mouth of all his holy prophets since the world began.

Exodus 32:15-16 And Moses turned, and went down from the mount, and the two tables of the testimony [witness, see Strongs] were in his hand: the tables were written on both their sides; on the one side and on the other were they written.  16  And the tables were the work of God, and the writing was the writing of God, graven upon the tables.

The Olive trees as the Bible

Zechariah 4:11-14 Then answered I, and said unto him, What are these two olive trees upon the right side of the candlestick and upon the left side thereof?  12  And I answered again, and said unto him, What be these two olive branches which through the two golden pipes empty the golden oil out of themselves?  13  And he answered me and said, Knowest thou not what these be? And I said, No, my lord.  14  Then said he, These are the two anointed ones, that stand by the Lord of the whole earth. [The oil being the Holy Spirit, which has its source in the Word of God, which in this picture is distributed to the 7 branches, which are the 7 lamp stands in Rev. 1, which are the 7 churches or stages of the Gospel Age] See our Verse by Verse study on Zechariah Chapter 4.

The 2 lamp stands as the Bible

Psalms 119:105 NUN. Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.

Proverbs 6:23 For the commandment is a lamp; and the law is light; and reproofs of instruction are the way of life:

The King James gives the wrong thought about the two witnesses, as they were not given power, as seen below in the Jameson Faucet and Brown commentary, that the word “power” is not in the Greek. This word is also omitted in the Sinaitic and other ancient manuscripts.

JFB: I will give power – There is no “power” in the Greek, so that “give” must mean “give commission,” or some such word.

In these two scriptures we have two time periods mentioned.

42 months=1260 days in which the holy city is tread under foot (the Bride of Christ, Little Flock)

1260 days that the two witnesses prophecy, while clothed in sackcloth and ashes.

The first 1260 (42 months) days corresponds to 539-1799, the Dark Ages. When Charlemagne recognized the Pope as the head of the Ecclesiastical System, ending with the death of the Pope in prison, which corresponds to the deadly wound of Rev. 13.

The second 1260 days, is not the same time period. We would speculate that this 1260 days begins with 265 AD the time when the church began to claim Apostolic powers and the Bible was then put in the sackcloth as it were and creeds took its place. It wasn’t until 1525 that Tyndale published the first set of New Testaments.

This time frame is arrived at by the second date and counting backwards. And as I said it is speculation, but does seem to fit.

  1. A complicated and controversial subject answered correctly, as far as I can comprehend.
