What can I do to visit the fatherless and the widows?

James 1:27 Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.

We as Christians, cannot keep our faith to ourselves. We are to “do good unto all men as we have opportunity, but especially unto the household of faith.” We are to look for opportunities of serving God, by building up His children, our brethren. We need to be there for one another, and help each other up when we fall and keep each other on the right path. We cannot go this journey alone, we need each other. We don’t finish the “race set before us” by leaving all the other runners behind, part of the race involves helping them get back into the race.

The widows or fatherless are easily forgotten as are our elderly who are stuck in nursing homes. I remember my mother finding out there was an elderly sister in a nursing home in our town–when she went to see her, the sister cried, “I thought God had forgotten me!” We should never let our brethren think God has forgotten them.

1 John 3:14 We know that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren. He that loveth not his brother abideth in death.

1 John 3:16 Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.

Excerpt from our verse by verse study on James

Bridling the tongue, visiting orphans and widows, and keeping unspotted from the world are all a part of having pure religion. But there is both a literal and a higher meaning regarding orphans and widows. We are to preach the Word to others so that they will get the Heavenly Father for a father and so that those who are spiritually hungry and lonely widows will become espoused to Christ. With this double significance regarding orphans and widows, one meaning is along practical, natural lines of daily living and showing concern and interest in others among the brotherhood. The other meaning is from the spiritual standpoint, for the gospel message is the best medicine of all.
