We get only a brief insight into Jesus’ discussion with the apostles, a synopsis of the drift of the conversation. In the vision, Jesus discussed his death with Moses and Elijah. Hence the topic of his death would have been discussed further as he and the three apostles descended the mountain.


Genesis Chapter 17: 13 Years After Ishmael’s Birth, Name Changed to Abraham, Circumcision

God was telling Abraham these things. Abraham could have heard a voice from a cloud or from the air or in his inner ear. Or he could have been in a tent and heard the voice. Whatever the method, Abraham’s audible response was, “O that Ishmael might live!” What does this account tell us about Abraham? He was 99 years old (verse 24). The promise was originally made when he was 75—24 years earlier. He had first thought that his chief servant, Eliezer, would be the heir, but God said the seed would come out of Abraham’s loins. Then he and Sarah thought that perhaps the seed was to come through Abraham but not through Sarah, so 13 years earlier (verse 25) he conceived Ishmael through Hagar the concubine. Abraham’s comment here in verse 18 indicates that he was resigned to Ishmael’s being the seed. He was saying, “I will be satisfied if Ishmael is the seed.” Abraham was not pressing the matter but was simply expressing a spirit of resignation and submission. Subconsciously, too, he was probably thinking of Sarah’s age. It would be a greater miracle for Sarah to bear a child now than for him to sire one, for he had fathered Ishmael when 86 years old. However, Abraham probably felt he, too, could no longer have children; that is, he probably became impotent after having Ishmael. And Sarah was definitely barren. Therefore, the miracle with Abraham and Sarah was twofold. (Many men over 100 had children both before and after Abraham, so impotency seemed to be his situation.)

The Church are collectively considered to be “one.” “She is the only one of her mother, she is the choice one of her that bare her.” The “mother … that bare her” is the Sarah Covenant, the “Jerusalem … above, … which is the mother of us all” (Gal. 4:26).

1 Kings Chapter 20: Encounter with Ben-hadad, Son of the Prophet

A son of the prophets asked in the name of the Lord that he be smitten. The one who disobeyed “the voice of the LORD” by refusing to do the smiting was slain by a lion. Then that prophet found another man and said, “Smite me.” This time the man smote him but only wounded him instead of killing him. Next the same prophet departed and, disguising himself, waited for King Ahab to come along. As Ahab passed by, the prophet cried out, “I went out into the midst of the battle, and behold, a soldier brought a man to me and said, ‘Keep this man. If by any means he is missing, your life shall be for his life, or else you will pay a talent of silver.’ And as your servant was busy here and there, the man was gone.” Ahab said to the disguised prophet, “So shall your judgment be. You yourself have decided it.” When the prophet removed the disguise, Ahab recognized him as one of the prophets. The prophet then pronounced judgment on Ahab for letting go the man (Ben-hadad) whom God had devoted to destruction. Ahab went back to Samaria “resentful and sullen” (see RSV). Subsequently Ahab mourned and repented, so the destruction of his house was delayed until his son came on the scene (see chapter 21).


I’m confused. Is this verse saying that because Jerusalem suffered punishment from God, her sins have been paid for…double? How does this fit with everything Jesus did?

“Cry unto her, that her warfare is accomplished [ended].” What “warfare”? Israel’s punishment, her “appointed time” (KJV margin), her “time of service” (RSV footnote). In other words, Israel’s “warfare” is not merely a date but a period of time that terminates with a date.

The “appointed time,” or “time of service,” is the “double”; that is, it is the time period of Israel’s punishment, or sentence. A “double” is a fixed period of time having a beginning and an ending that correspond to a previous beginning and ending. The first part of the double was a period of favor of 1,845 years, and the second part of the double was a period of disfavor of equal length, or 1,845 years. The turning point in the double was the year AD 33, the middle of the 70th week. (Messiah was cut off in the midst of the last week of the 70-week prophecy in Daniel.) The 1,845-year period of favor began with the death of Jacob, for at that time, God began to deal with Jacob’s 12 sons as a nation (of 12 tribes). The blessing that had previously been on Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob passed on to the 12 sons of Jacob. From Jacob’s death through AD 33 was the period of favor when God dealt directly with Israel and only with Israel out of all nations (Amos 3:2).

During the permission of evil, God has been exercising His great power of the universe with the one exception of planet Earth, where His power is exercised only within certain limits. For example, not one of the consecrated can die before it is his or her time. With regard to the public at large, God’s will is not recognized as being done on earth, yet He is aware of all that happens. When He reigns forever and ever, the exercise of His will on earth will be recognized.

The Laver

Thus the laver clearly typifies baptism. We come by the brazen altar to the laver. It is not our offering, however, which entitles us to the benefits of the laver. Jesus is the altar, and by or through Jesus’ offering, we approach to be washed. Without this washing, we have no part or lot in the matter.
