In the midst of a corrupt people, Jeremiah prayed to God for his personal salvation. He reasoned, “I declared your message to the nation as faithfully as I could. Give me courage and strength of character so that I do not succumb to the tauntings, criticisms, and persecutions incurred because of proclaiming your message.”

Keturah bore six sons to Abraham. Hence Abraham had a total of eight sons, including Isaac and Ishmael. Keturah’s sons prefigure the world in the Kingdom under the New Covenant. Ishmael represents natural Israel, and Hagar, his mother, represents the Law Covenant. Isaac portrays the Church, developed under Sarah, a picture of the Grace Covenant. Hence the three wives of Abraham represent three covenants.

As the enemy roars, Israel will be frozen with terror, powerless to deliver itself. This verse indicates that the enemy is succeeding and there is no hope for Israel. In Scripture, a lion is noted for the strength of its jaw and its roar. When a lion captures a prey, its powerful jaws scrunch the animal, bones and all, in the eating process. Here the lion has the victim in its jaws and is carrying it away. The sound of the flint on the pavement and the roar of the lion both cause terror to the beholding victim.

The object of these parables, then, was not to depict to our minds what the Kingdom would be like after it has been established in the world, but rather to picture before our minds something respecting the processes of development by which the Kingdom-class would be selected from amongst mankind and made ready for the Kingdom which is to be set up at the second coming of Christ in power and great glory,— when he shall establish that Millennial Kingdom for the very purpose of granting a judgment or trial to all the families of the earth—peradventure under the favorable opportunities of knowledge, etc., then granted unto them, many may choose life through obedience to God and attain it.
