It is hard to “turn many away from iniquity” if one is not a good example himself of walking properly before God. The priesthood of Malachi’s day was doing the opposite and, consequently, was leading many into iniquity.

Verse 14 is a lesson or caution that comes down to us, for we have made a vow of consecration and we sacrifice unto the Lord. It is easy to criticize others, but we, too, could be guilty of offering “a corrupt [or unacceptable] thing.”

We get only a brief insight into Jesus’ discussion with the apostles, a synopsis of the drift of the conversation. In the vision, Jesus discussed his death with Moses and Elijah. Hence the topic of his death would have been discussed further as he and the three apostles descended the mountain.

MALACHI’S PROPHECY, the most striking features of which constitute the lesson of today, concludes the Old Testament canon. It contains not only a Divine rebuke for sin, but also a Divine promise of rescue. It fits well to the time generally assigned to it—Nehemiah’s period. It remained for Israel to show thorough repentance and to institute thorough reforms. The needed reformation fits equally well to our day. In their professed devotions they were robbing God and impoverishing themselves. It rested upon them to note what great blessings would be theirs if they rendered a whole-heart service to the King of kings.
