Verse 15 is contrary to normal logic, but Paul’s method helps to bring out a point that will be seen as we proceed. The wood, hay, and stubble are all burned; that is, they are destroyed, yet the individual is saved.

Br. Brendan leads a study discussing different types of the secondary class of Christians called Great Company or Great Multitude. The basis for the name of this class of Christians is taken from Revelation chapter 7, verse 14.

Anyone who can say that they can interpret prophesy to the “t” can’t be trusted. It is interpretation based on scripture–therefore cannot be understood in full until it is a past event.

Jesus was trying to raise their thinking to a higher level. The supplied food represented his message, his words, but even the apostles did not have a depth of understanding until Pentecost when they got the Holy Spirit, the spirit of remembrance. Then the meaning of Jesus’ words dawned on them.

This is the object of the sin-offerings; to release mankind from the dominion of death and restore them to the perfection of being which is essential to perfect happiness and at-one-ment with the Creator. This is the blessing which comes to all the families of the earth through The Seed of Abraham. This is the good news which was preached to Abraham, as we read: “God, foreseeing that He would justify the heathen [all mankind—Gentiles] through faith, preached before the gospel [good tidings] to Abraham, saying, In thee, and in thy seed, shall all nations be blessed [justified]…which Seed is Christ [primarily the head, and secondarily the body]; and if ye be Christ’s [members] then are ye Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise” referred to—viz.: that these may bless all the families of the earth. (Gal. 3:16,19) But the Seed must be complete before the blessing comes, as shown in the type just considered:—The sin-offering must be ended before all the blessings resulting can flow out.

The King James Version properly has a new paragraph here. Song 3:1,2 and 5:2-6 tell of two bedroom scenes. Chapter 3 gives the Little Flock’s attitude when they are awakened, and Chapter 5 contrasts the Great Company’s attitude when they are awakened. The Pastor’s writings furnish many clues and ideas, which, when collated, result in pictures that are tenfold clearer. Details and other truths are revealed in the collation.

Category: 1 & 2 Corinthians, Verse by Verse --Studies led by Br. Frank Shallieu (Click on Book name)
With the dispute going on in the ecclesia about who was most effective as a teacher and instructor of the Word, this morality problem was being neglected. The dispute about teachers was more along doctrinal lines, and of course doctrine is very important. However, there are degrees of importance, and doctrinal differences can be tolerated if they are not fundamental and do not violate principle. To give in on principle erodes conscience and firmness of character. In summary, then, the Corinthians were having back-and-forth arguments about Paul, Apollos, and Cephas and ignoring the immorality. Doctrines, principles, and moral behavior need to be considered in order for us to be conformed to the image of Christ (Rom. 8:29). Not knowing the difference between right and wrong will affect our moral behavior and conduct, so that type of doctrine is of primary importance. The Bible is approximately one-third history, one-third prophecy, and one-third moral behavior. All are important in understanding the mind of God.
