Verse 15 is contrary to normal logic, but Paul’s method helps to bring out a point that will be seen as we proceed. The wood, hay, and stubble are all burned; that is, they are destroyed, yet the individual is saved.

Of all the pressing experiences in the life of Christ, the thing that he was most concerned about was his oneness with the Father’s will. “But I have a baptism to undergo, and how distressed I am until it is accomplished!”
Many do not generally grasp the full import of immersion, and look at the water rather than the death which it symbolizes. The real baptism is that which cannot be seen, except in its influence upon the conduct; and the real church which is joined is the church whose names are written in heaven whose members cannot be known positively until the close of this age, when they shall be glorified with the Head.
In the midst of a corrupt people, Jeremiah prayed to God for his personal salvation. He reasoned, “I declared your message to the nation as faithfully as I could. Give me courage and strength of character so that I do not succumb to the tauntings, criticisms, and persecutions incurred because of proclaiming your message.”
This is the object of the sin-offerings; to release mankind from the dominion of death and restore them to the perfection of being which is essential to perfect happiness and at-one-ment with the Creator. This is the blessing which comes to all the families of the earth through The Seed of Abraham. This is the good news which was preached to Abraham, as we read: “God, foreseeing that He would justify the heathen [all mankind—Gentiles] through faith, preached before the gospel [good tidings] to Abraham, saying, In thee, and in thy seed, shall all nations be blessed [justified]…which Seed is Christ [primarily the head, and secondarily the body]; and if ye be Christ’s [members] then are ye Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise” referred to—viz.: that these may bless all the families of the earth. (Gal. 3:16,19) But the Seed must be complete before the blessing comes, as shown in the type just considered:—The sin-offering must be ended before all the blessings resulting can flow out.

Our lesson opens with the declaration that the child Samuel “ministered unto the Lord before Eli”; that is to say, he was a servant of the Lord by virtue of his being a servant to Eli, who was the Lord’s representative and priest. The Word of Jehovah was precious in those days; that is, it was seldom that God sent messages at that time. Perhaps that of the angel of the Lord who appeared to the father and mother of Samson, probably fifty years before, was the last direct communication between the Lord and any of His people Israel. “There was no open vision”–visions and revelations were not then being given. The Divine Plan was hidden. The Urim and the Thummim answers of the Lord to the inquiries of the people had ceased.
Divine light shows us the temple at Jerusalem as more than a house of worship for its time, as a type of a greater Temple to be built by a greater than Solomon. That greater Temple, the New Testament assures us, is the Church, the Body of Christ, of which he is the Head. This is the Temple of which St. Peter declares that himself and all of the Lord’s thoroughly consecrated followers are antitypical, the living stones or members.
Spiritual Israelites must learn this lesson—that in handling the holy things of the divine Word, the divine plan, the services of the Truth, the ministry of the Church of Christ, they are not at liberty to do as they please, merely assuring themselves that their motives are good. It is their duty to note carefully the divine will and to follow out the program in the order of the directions of the divine Word. Furthermore it is for us to learn, too, that God designs that not all the services are to be performed by one or two persons, but that there is a part in the service of God for all of the consecrated and that each is to be granted the opportunity for such service, as the Lord has planned. Some may occupy the priestly service, which others may not enjoy, and some may occupy the Levites’ service, and their opportunities are not to be taken from them. Again another important lesson to be learned by Spiritual Israelites is that God is guiding His own affairs; that He is as much interested in them as we are and more, too, and that He is fully capable of their management. Some of the Lord’s people carry great burdens which do not belong to them and which hinder them from the rest and joy which otherwise might be theirs. Others are so active, so zealous, that they fancy that the work of God would not be accomplished at all unless they did it. The Lord wishes us to learn the important lesson, “In all thy ways acknowledge him,” “and he shall give thee the desires of thy heart.” Only by recognizing the Lord as first in every feature of His work and by recognizing ourselves as honored by Him in every opportunity of service shall we be able to bring blessing to ourselves and to others.
Step by step Saul and his servant were led to the very village where Samuel was staying. The suggestion came to the servant, probably by divine power, to go to Samuel, who had been a seer for many years. (A seer could forecast situations, almost like a mystic.) It was favorable that Saul felt they should compensate Samuel with a present, but he had nothing to give him. The servant offered to give his quarter of a shekel to the “man of God” as a token of their appreciation for telling them the way.
